CHRISTMAS VILLAGE BRINGS LIGHT TO DECEMBER DARKNESS IN MY HELSINKI FINLAND NEIGHBOURHOOD

Lots of activity on the normally very quiet streets in my Helsinki Finland Village Marttila – Martas in Swedish. The village is part of the Pitäjänmäki – Sockenbacka region of the Finnish Capital.

Lots of people have come here all through December. The reason is our annual Christmas Village where we want to bring light and happiness in the midst of our dark times. Actually it is dark here also in reality, with sun rising around 10 am and setting only some five or six hours later.

Before Christmas, many daycare and school groups moved from one small exhibit to another and when it got dark in the afternoons families and also many elderly people visited to enjoy this magic season. During the holidays even more people have come here for a pleasant walk. This will now continue also for the first January week.

The main media in the Finnish capital have picked up our Christmas Village, both on TV and in the large daily newspapers. This has created lots of interest and one can see that people come also from far away. Actually, we haven’t thought that this is a really big attraction but apparently the small exhibits and twinkling lights are popular and we get many nice comments. Of course, all is Covid-secured, people move outdoors, the streets are broad like the use to be in this country, and distances are carefully held.

There are just over 100 family homes here, surrounded by large green gardens. In earlier years the families produced their own fruits and vegetables and Marttila is still filled with old apple trees and berry bushes.

The village was originally built by war veterans returning from the front in the mid 1940s after the wars with the Soviet Union. Many of the houses were built by the Red Cross, for those who returned disabled. An important number of them were gifts from our neigbouring country Sweden, they are sometimes still called Sweden-houses.

The other half of this village was built by the returning soldiers themselves, and their families. These are a bit larger and all of them share the same construction. Today, the street views are protected and one still gets an impression of how it was before. Only two of the houses have been built later, after fires destroyed the earlier ones.

Even if Marttila looks old fashioned in many ways it is also one of the most modern suburban areas in Helsinki. Two years ago we won the prestigious European Broadband Award for our fast fibre network where several service providers compete – there are 4 fibres which is unusual for nets like this – and where we also offer high quality public TV connections. This network was built by ourselves, with much voluntary work, and is now owned by our residents’ cooperative. And no, we never received any support, neither from the Finnish government, nor by the European Union.

So here residents have created a Christmas Village with exhibitions, lights and short stories telling about the many secrets that hide around this idyllic place.

YOUNG FIREFIGHTERS OF THE FUTURE TRAINING AT THE PITÄJÄNMÄKI – SOCKENBACKA VOLUNTARY FIRE BRIGADE

Just back from a walk to our Helsinki Finland village voluntary fire brigade Pitäjänmäen VPK – Sockenbacka FBK. Established 110 years ago in 1908, it used to be connected to the traditional smoke stack industry in this old community. ( 25 September 2019 )

Now times have changed but the fire brigade continues its active service. It is linked to the Helsinki Rescue Department, but works on a voluntary basis.

Like other voluntary fire brigades, ours has at times had difficulties in recruiting new young members. The intervention brigade has worked fine, but youth has been absent. Now finally, a youth group has started under the skilled and enthusiastic leadership of the fire brigade president Henrik Helenius.

Today I saw a small but happy group of young villagers taking their first steps on the road to become an active fire brigade volunteer. This was a really pleasant and positive experience. It is great that there are experienced and skilled people like Henrik who devote their time and energy to these important activities.

And yes, the voluntary fire brigade in Pitäjänmäki – Sockenbacka has a shining red fire engine and a crew bus, and yes they do all kinds of emergencies and community services as well, not only practice sessions.

LUONTOSEIKKAILULLE LIITO-ORAVAN MAILMAAN – HELSINGIN OSALLISTUVAN BUDJETOINNIN PROJEKTILUONNOS

Luontoseikkailulle liito-oravan maailmaan – opastettu ulkoilureitti Mätäjoen varrelle.

Tällä nimellä ehdotamme että kaupunki käyttäisi osallistuvan budjetointinsa määrärahaa omilla lähialueillamme.

Tänään viimeistelin Mätäjokea koskevan ehdotuksemme Helsingin osallistuvaan budjetointiin. Kaupunki käyttää tänä vuonna yhteensä hieman yli 4 miljoonaa Euroa asukkaiden itsensä ehdottamien suunnitelmien toteuttamiseen. Syyskaudella pääsevät kaikki 12 vuotta täyttäneet helsinkiläiset äänestämään siitä mitkä ehdotukset toteutetaan.

Pitäjänmäeltä on tehty myös muita hyviä ja tärkeitä ehdotuksia jotka löytyvät Helsingin osallistuvan budjetoinnin Omastadi-sivuilta.

Luontoseikkailulle liito-oravan maailmaan – opastettu ulkoilureitti Mätäjoen varrelle.

Läntisen Helsingin läpi virtaa rikas ja rakas Mätäjoki. Jo kivikaudella asuttiin Malminkartanon ja Pitäjänmäen rannoilla. Maan nousu muutti merenlahden virraksi jota pitkin purjehdittiin sisämaahan. Myöhemmin syntyi rannoille kyliä ja tehtaita. Nyt palautetaan jokea luonnonmukaiseen tilaansa. Me haluamme tuoda tämän kaikille lähemmäksi, herkkää luontoa suojellen. Opastettu luontopolku veisi Malminkartanosta Pitäjänmäen Marttilan ja Strömbergin putouksen ja puiston kautta Talin rantaan asti.

Sijainti:

Mätäjoki ja sen välitön lähialue.

Kohderyhmä:

Alueen asukkaat, koululaiset, opiskelijat ja luontoretkeilijät, ulkoilevat perheet, kaikki helsinkiläiset ja muualta tulijat. Myönteinen vaikutus kaikkien Mätäjoen varrella sijaitsevien kaupunginosien ilmeeseen ja toimivuuteen.

Tavoitteet:

Mätäjoen kunnostamiseen ja sen luonnon suojelemiseen on viime vuosina kiinnitetty paljon huomiota. Kalakanta on elpynyt ja mm. liito-oravat ovat levittäytyneet alueella. Ulkoiluteitä on paikoin paranneltu ja tietoisuus Mätäjoen luonnon ja historian arvoista on alueella selvästi kasvanut. Mätäjoki vahvistaa läntisen Helsingin omaleimaisuutta ja kaupunkikuvaa.

Alueen asukkaiden ja muiden kävijöiden toiveena on että tämä jokimaalma tuotaisi lähemmäksi luontoa kunnioittavalla tavalla luomalla yhtenäinen opastettu ja esimerkiksi citynature-alustaan liitetty valaistu ulkoilureitti pysähdyspaikkoineen Malminkartanon lammelta Vihdintielle ja sitten Kaupintietä sillan yli Marttilaan, sieltä Korsutietä Pitäjänmäentielle josta Strömbergin putouksen ja puiston kautta alajuoksua myöten Talin rantaan. Opastetaulut luonnosta ja historiasta kertovat joesta ja pitävät yllä käyttäjien mielenkiintoa.

Reitin luominen kannustaa osallistumaan Mätäjoen alueen jo aktiiviseen talkootoimintaan.

Toimenpiteet:

Mätäjoen Malminkartanon lammelta Strömbergin putouksen kautta Talin rantaan luodaan yhtenäinen myös netissä opastettu ulkoilureitti runsain opastustauluin suojellen joen ja sen ympäristön rikasta luontoa.

– Kannelmäen Mätäjoen lammen ympäristöön voidaan luoda alueita vapaa-ajan toiminnoille.

– Kehätien ja Vihdintien välillä tulisi päästä lähemmäksi jokilaaksoa luomalla näköalapaikka lähelle jokea samantapaisesti kuin Vantaan Pitkäkoskella on tehty.

– Marttilassa tulisi joki tuoda lähemmäksi viemällä reitti Kaupintieltä kävelysillan yli Korsutielle ja sieltä uutta joen puoleista jalkakäytävää myöten Pitäjänmäentien risteykseen.

– Pitäjänmäentieltä katualuetta myöten rautatien alitse Strömbergin putoukselle on reitti viitoitettava ja liitettävä runsain mielenkiintoa säilyttävin opastetauluin kokonaisuuteen.

– Alajuoksulla talin rantaan on reitti pyrittävä ohjaamaan selkeästi ja turvallisesti golfkentän ohi.

– Merenrantaan rakennetaan kevyt laituri näköala- ja lepotasanteineen.

Toteutukseen osallistuvat yhteisöt ja ihmiset

Mätäjoki virtaa useiden kaupunginosien läpi, läntisellä alueella ja sen ulkopuolella. Joki on asukkaille tärkeä ja monet alueelliset ja luontojärjestöt osallistuvat jo nyt aktiivisesti sen kehittämiseen ja hoitoon mm talkootoiminnalla. Tämän suunnitelman toteuttaminen sopii tähän luontevasti ja alueen kaupunginosayhdistykset sekä täällä toimivat luontokerhot samoin kuin laajalti alueen asukkaan ovat valmiita osallistumaan suunnitteluun ja toteuttamiseen.

War veterans village in Finland received the European Broadband Award 2017

A small village built by war veterans and their families in the 1940s brought home the European Broadband Award 2017. The prize was awarded by three European Commissioners jointly, at a European Union conference and ceremony on 20-21 November. The ”Helsinki Optical Fibre Cooperative” had entered into one of five competition categories, ”Openness and competition”. This was the first time that a Finnish communications network scored the top position.

The broadband network reaches out to most of the almost two hundred family houses in the Marttila Village.

The EU aim is that ”by 2020, all Union citizens have access to much higher internet speeds of above 30 Mbps and 50 % or more Union households subscribe to internet connections above 100 Mbps.” In Marttila we have already come much further.

The large majority of the 100 plus mainly single family houses in Marttila are connected through a fast and high capacity optical fiber network. It offers symmetric speeds between 100 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. Even higher speeds are possible, and have been tested.

To choose optical fiber instead of relying on wireless connections through one or another of the big telecom operators was clear for us from the beginning. As the mobile phone networks get increasingly congested, which is already happening here in Helsinki at times, connections slow down and become much less reliable.

The connection that I use now is through Telia and gives me speeds clearly above the 100 Mbit/s. The upload speeds that always tend to be much lower are identical to downloads which is a major benefit. Optical fiber is the only sustainable solution that carries far into the foreseeable future.

Much of the work was done by the Marttila village residents themselves.

We also wanted to own and control our own communications. Therefore our cooperative brings four fibers to each home instead of the single one that operator-owned and managed nets do. Multiple telecom operators, large and small, compete and sell their internet services directly to our members using our network.

One of the reasons that we started to build ourselves was the lack of interest by both public and private operators. Government focus is on rural areas and they clearly want urban regions to be built up by commercial actors. The commercial telecom operators are not interested in neighbourhoods like ours which from their point of view are too sparsely populated .

Our village network is the first of its kind in an urban area. It has already inspired followers and other cooperatives have been formed in different parts of the country. We have proved that not only big multinational businesses can build and own communications networks, but also grass-root users themselves.

Of course we were lucky to have some really skilled villagers who were committed to managing and implementing the project with us others. There was a great amount of unpaid voluntary work that made this network accessible for residents. It has contributed much also to the togetherness across the many generations who live in this green oasis in the middle of a large metropolitan area – well it is much more snow-white in the winter…

Frontmannaby i Helsingfors vann EU-pris för sitt datanät

Europeiska bredbandspriset 2017


En frontmannaby i Sockenbacka i Helsingfors har fått EU:s stora Bredbandspris 2017, i en av fem tävlingskategorier. Priset tilldelades för ett snabbt fibernät som förenar över hundra egnahemshus i området, och som är öppet för priskonkurrens mellan teleoperatörer. 

Vid en ceremoni på en Europeisk datakonferens i Bryssel i början av veckan (20-21.11.) överräckte tre EU-komissionsmedlemmar tillsammans priset till data-aktivisterna från Helsingfors.

Det lilla Sockenbacka-kooperativet väckte positiv uppmärksamhet för både sin initiativrikedom och det goda projektresultatet. Med fyra fibrer till varje hushåll och mycket snabba dataförbindelser är nätet redan nu långt över de mål som EU har ställt upp för de kommande åren.

De flesta övriga deltagarna i tävlingen var ministerier eller privata storföretag. Projekten var ofta EU-finansierade och datatjänsterna begränsade till en teleoperatör. Det finländska kooperativet är däremot helt finansierat av invånarna själva. Kostnaderna har hållits nere genom ett omfattande frivilligarbete både inom projektledning och nätverksbygge. 

Det prestigefyllda bredbandspriset – European Broadband Awards – tilldelas vartannat år till de fem bästa projekten i medlemsländerna. De två andra finalisterna i sockenbackabornas kategori var Ungerns utvecklingsministerium och en stor irländsk teleoperatör, båda med internationellt finansierade jätteprojekt. fff

Helsinkiläisen rintamamieskylän laajakaista-aktivistit voittivat EU-palkinnon


Euroopan Unionin laajakaistapalkinto 2017

Marttilan kylä Helsingin Pitäjänmäellä on voittanut Euroopan Unionin suuren Laajakaistapalkinnon 2017. Ensimmäisenä suomalaisena tietoliikennehankkeena kyläläisten itse rakentama nopea kuituverkko voitti yhden viidestä viidestä kilpailusarjasta.

Brysselissä alkuviikolla (20-21.11.) pidetyssä suuressa laajakaistakonferenssissa luovuttivat kolme Euroopan Komission jäsentä yhdessä ensimmäisen  palkinnon pitäjänmäkeläisille aktivisteille.

Pieni helsinkiläinen osuuskunta herätti omatoimisuudellaan ja projektinsa toteutuksella erityistä huomiota kilvassa jossa muut osanottajat olivat yleensä joko ministeriöitä tai monikansallisia toimijoita. Monet näistä 

Rintamamieskylään rakennettu nopea valokuituverkko kattaa toistasataa kotia ja on myös tekniseltä suorituskyvyltään ylivoimainen verrattaessa jopa EU:n asettamiin lähivuosien kehitystavoittaisiin.

Arvostettu laajakaistapalkinto – European Broadband Awards – kilpailutetaan joka toinen vuosi EU:n jäsenmaissa toteutettujen projektien kesken. Osuuskunta Helsingin Valokuidut oli ilmoittautunut kilpailukategoriaan jossa edellytettiin avoimen kilpailun edistämistä palveluntarjoajien kesken.

Loppusuoralla Marttilan kylän tietoverkon kanssa finalisteina kilpailivat unkarilainen ministeriö ja suuri irlantilainen tietoliikkenneyritys.
