Local to global comments in three languages. Much also from Pitäjänmäki Sockenbacka in Helsinki Helsingfors Finland, as well as from the organisations I participate in. The older content is from my previous blog page which I have now closed. Most of the contents on the earlier pages deals with sustainability, human rights and social responsibility in the global supply chains.
After stone age excavations it was City Hall in Helsinki this afternoon, discussing municipally owned or supported community centers in the Finnish capital. We saw some good examples of other city region associations having done a great work renovating old historical buildings that otherwise would have been demolished. Superb work by our friends in other parts of town !
I hope that also we here in Pitäjänmäki – Sockenbacka will one day have the chance to build up a place of our own, especially as we are growing very fast. This is a part of town where the multicultural profile has increased maybe faster than anywhere else. We need to work a lot to preserve and develop our community cohesion and for that we need tools.
Actually we have tried to get our own space already over many years – even decades – as my predecessors as association presidents tell me.
Today, we work on our own, financed by our members through their modest contributions, without any city support.
The city services had made an obvious mistake and budgeted far too little this year for our kind of residents’ organisations. It did feel a bit strange that they were very complementary about the work we are doing but just had to excuse themselves as they had ran out of money.
Not the fault of the responsible civil servants who have always been very supportive, but maybe something for the politicians to take another look at.
Well in any case, today we manage with the support of our local members’ and the help we get from the Pitäjänmäki business community…
This was a great experience and learning opportunity to participate i the stone age digs in my own village. Lead by archaeologists Jan Fast and Janne Soisalo the team uncovered once again new treasures and new knowledge from the smooth sands of the Nuolipuisto ( Swedish: Pilparken) park. This is incredibly important for the people of Pitäjänmäki – Sockenbacka who learn new things about their past.
The digs were hosted by Pitäjänmäki-seura, the local community association that I am president of, and co-sponsored by the amateur archaeologists’ association ANGO.
This site at the Nuolipuisto park with its children’s playground houses the richest stone age finds of the Finnish capital. In June 2019 professional and amateur archaeologists together with villagers from here were unearthing loads of ceramics as well as other items. They believe that this used to be a small island where people went for fishing and trading and maybe even lived. The land which was pushed down by the inland ice has of course risen considerably over this time and today the site is a small sandy hill.
We had a lot of fun as well, such as when the small kids from the next door playground came over and messed up both the digging tools and the neat stacks of sand. To do the digs like this is really a superb way for creating an interest for archaeology among small and big, and an understanding of how much it tells about our ancestry.
We are not Rome or Athens but our first villagers lived, cooked and traded here more than 5,000 years ago 😊
Kaksi ja puoli tuntia vierähti Patterinmäen ympäristön metsässä tänä aamuna 24 toukokuuta 2019. Olimme siellä yhdessä pajamäkeläisten naapuriemme Pajamäki-seuran, Uudenmaan ELY-keskuksen. Raide-Jokerin, Helsingin kaupungin ja luontojärjestöjen kanssa katsastamassa miten pikaraitiotien rakentaminen alueen läpi vaikuttaa luontoarvoihin ja ympäristöön.
Raide-Jokerin ja sen omistajakuntien olisi pitänyt jo paljon aikaisemmin keskustella kunnolla tämän projektin toteuttamisesta alueen asukkaita edustavan Pajamäki-seuran kanssa. Vaikka kaavasuunnitelmista oli seuraa kuultu niin luontoselvitykset ja toteuttamissuunnitelmat oli ilmeisesti tehty aika lailla omassa keskuudessa.
Ei ollut mikään ihme että sinivärillä kaadettavaksi merkityt puut – joita muuten oli ja on paljon – herättivät asukkaiden huolen.
Tämänaamuinen maastokatselmus osoitti että naapuriseuramme teki aivan oikein hakiessaan Uudenmaan ELY-keskukselta väliaikaista toimenpidekieltoa. Ellei tätä olisi haettu ja myönnetty olisivat laajat hakkuut käynnissä jo nyt, keskellä lintujen pesimisaikaa.
Kuten Pajamäki-seuran tilannekatsauksesta tässä alla voi nähdä on Uudenmaan ELY-keskuksen osalta ensisijaisesti kyseessä liito-oravien asumisalueesta ja pesivien lintujen suojaamisesta. Mutta myös yleisemmin on syytä kantaa huolta siitä miten tuo Raide-Jokerin reititys Patterinmäen tunnelin kautta vaikuttaa tämän arvokkaan ja tärkeän luontoalueen ympäristöarvoihin.
Metsäalueella näimme myös että paikoin pitää näitä kaatamissuunnitelmia vielä tarkistaa jotta luonnolle tehtäisi mahdollisimman vähän väkivaltaa. Kyseessä ei ole vain itse jokeriradan reitti tunneliaukkojen molemmin puolin vaan myös pelastusteiden vetäminen metsäluonnon halki. Tietysti ne pitää tehdä säännösten mukaisesti, mutta omasta mielestäni olisi hyvä jos yksityiskohtaisempaa toteutusta vielä kerran voitaisi paikoin yhdessä katsoa, myös pelastusviranomaisten kanssa.
Nyt on kuitenkin jo aikalisää saatu vielä avoinna olevien kysymysten ratkaisemiseen. Rakennuttajatkin ovat varmaan nähneet että on tarpeen vielä kerran katsella yhdessä pajamäkeläisten kanssa miten työt voidaan tehdä ympäristöä ja luontoa kunnioittaen, ja arvokkaita vanhoja puita mahdollisimman laajalti säästäen.
Oma käsitykseni tämän päivän kiertokävelystä on että linnut saavat nyt rauhassa pesiä tällä kauniilla metsäalueella ennekuin puunkaadot alkavat. Patterinmäki lähialueineen kuuluu tietysti Pajamäkeen ja on siten Pajamäki-seuran toiminta-aluetta. Kun itse olemme myös kovin lähellä – ja tuleehan Raide-Jokeri sinne Pitäjänmäentietä pitkin – on myös Pitäjänmäki-seuralla selvä kiinnostus olla kuvassa mukana.
Luonnollisesti tuemme tässä Pajamäki-seuraa joka on meidän tapaamme ottanut myönteisen kannan Raide-Jokerin rakentamiseen. Tässä ei siis ole tarkoitus hankaloittaa tai hidastaa tämän projektin toteuttamista vaan huolehtia siitä että sen toteutus sujuisi mahdollisimman myönteisellä tavalla ja tietysti lain määräyksiä ja luontoa kunnioittaen, ja myös asukkaita kuullen.

Tilannekatsausta 24.5.2019
Pajamäki-seura jätti 14.5. Uudenmaan ELY-keskukselle toimenpidekieltohakemuksen koskien Raide-Jokerin valmistelevia töitä ( = puiden hakkuita) Pajamäen länsipuoleisessa metsässä.
Toimenpidekiellon perusteena ovat havainnot liito-oravan säännönmukaisesta elämästä alueella ja lisäksi hakkuiden ajoittuminen lintujen pesimäaikaan. Toimenpidekiellon ollessa prosessissa ei alueella saa aloittaa hakkuita.
Liito-orava on Suomen luonnonsuojelulailla ja EU:n luontodirektiivillä suojeltu uhanalainen laji. Sen lisääntymis- ja levähdyspaikan hävittäminen tai häiritseminen on lailla kiellettyä.
Tänään 24.5. osallistuimme ELY-keskuksen kutsumina maastokäynnille, jonka tarkoituksena oli, että asian eri osapuolet tutustuvat yhdessä alueeseen ja toimenpidekiellossa esiin nostettuihin seikkoihin. Maastokäynnille osallistui ELY-keskuksen, Raide-Jokerin allianssin, Helsingin kaupungin ympäristötoimen, Birdlife Suomen, Pitäjänmäki-seuran ja Pajamäki-seuran edustajia. Today, on Sunday19th of May, Finland honoured its war heroes. After the Soviet Union attacked this country in 1939, almost all Finnish families lost loved ones, the whole population defending our existence as a western independent county. Here in my Helsinki city region – Pitäjänmäki or Sockenbacka in Swedish – we have a small graveyard and memorial for these war heroes and of course I was there at the ceremony, expressing our gratitude, as president of the local residents association.
Maybe not the largest, but active and sincere, the social democratic local in my Helsinki suburban village. Starting the 1st of May celebrations yesterday with the traditional glass of mead at the small office – miniature Workers Hall – of the Pitäjänmäki Workers Association ( Pitäjänmäen Työväenyhdistys ).
My own candidate in the upcoming European Parliament elections Mikkel Näkkäläjärvi joined us for a brief talk about the aims of the forthcoming Finnish EU presidency. Mikkel comes from the northernmost part of Finland, Ivalo in Lapland, and will be the first EU parliamentarian representing Europe’s recognised indigenous peoples. Mikkel is also president of Finland’s social democratic youth and is considered to have a very good chance to get elected.
In our pictures also Pirjo Kivistö, my neighbour and friend in Pitäjänmäki, who is chair of this social democratic local and very active also on the municipal party levels.
Uskomattoman hieno perhejuhla uskomattoman hienossa auringonpaisteessa 27 huhtikuuta 2019. Pitäjänmäkeläisen Leikkipuisto Strömbergin Vappujuhla on Pitäjänmäki-seurallekin vuoden kohokohtia josta suuri kiitos leikkipuiston väelle, Strömbergin koulun vanhempainyhdistykselle ja kaikille Strömbergin ja Talin perheille ja muille asukkaille, ja tietysti muillekin pitskulaisille ja vieraille jotka pääsivät mukaan. Tässä juhlatunnelmassa haluaa todella olla mukana!
